Typical food and places to eat in Goiânia

In addition to the University Cafeteria, there are other food options on the UFG campuses in Goiânia.

Inside the Samambaia Campus there are several snack bars to have breakfast or snacks throughout the day, such as the DCE Cafeteria, the EMAC Cafeteria, Mrs. Verinha (a woman who sells homemade snacks and who is located in the pantry of Faculty of Letters) and the Reuni Cafeteria. Reuni also functions as a restaurant, offering self-service food at lunchtime.Close to the School of Veterinary and Animal Science (Escola de Veterinária e Zooctenica - EVZ) and the School of Agronomy (Escola de Agronomia - EA), we have the Agronomy School Canteen (click here to see the location) and there is also a restaurant inside the Emater building.

On Avenida Esperança, outside the Samambaia Campus, but very close to it, we have several restaurants such as: Gurupi Restaurante (better known as Pamonharia - https://www.instagram.com/gurupirestaurante/), Restaurante Fogão Caipira (https://www .instagram.com/fogaocaipira01/), Subway (franchised sandwich chain), several snack bars, among other options. There are also other possibilities around Avenida Esperança, just search for “restaurants near me” or “restaurants near Campus Samambaia” on Google and you will have information about location, days and opening times.

There is a mall 5 km from the Samambaia Campus called Passeio das Águas Shopping, where there is a variety of restaurant options for lunch, snacks and dinner.

On the Colemar Natal e Silva Campus (in the University Sector) there is also a University Restaurant, which operates in the same way as R.U. do Samambaia. In the surroundings and within the Colemar Natal e Silva Campus there are also several varieties of snack bars and restaurants, which you can find by searching for “restaurants near me”, “snack bars near me” or “restaurants near Praça Universitária” on Google.

Local Cuisine

One of the most emblematic dishes is the famous empadão goiano. Made with crispy dough and stuffed with pork, chicken, sausage, cheese, and pequi, this delight is an explosion of flavors and aromas that mesmerizes everyone who tries it.

Another Goiás specialty is pequi, a typical fruit of the region. Its strong presence in the local cuisine is notable in pequi ricei, a dish that combines the citrus flavor and intense fragrance of the fruit with white rice, creating a unique combination. The experience of eating pequi in Goiás is remarkable. Eating pequi makes it possible to connect with the local identity and provides a little piece of the local culinary tradition. It is important to receive guidance to enjoy it safely, since pequi has thorns in its core - you must not bite it, as it can result in injuries!

Another traditional and much appreciated dish is galinhada goiana. Made with rice, chicken, seasonings and spices, it's a hearty, flavorful meal perfect for sharing with family and friends.

Pamonha and rice with pork backbone are also highlights of the Goiás cuisine. Pamonha is a delicacy made from green corn, wrapped in corn leaves and cooked, resulting in a creamy and tasty mass. Rice with pork backbone, on the other hand, consists of a combination of rice, pork backbone, and seasonings, resulting in a dish with a striking and irresistible flavor.

To end a meal in Goiás on a high note, be sure to try the typical sweets, such as dulce de leche, queijadinha, and rice pudding. These desserts are a real treat, with flavors that refer to the culinary traditions of Goiás.

In Setor Universitário there is a restaurant specialized in pasta called Abruzzo (click here to see the location). It operates at lunch and dinner times. Close to the Setor Leste Universitário, there is a self-service restaurant called Júnior (click here to see the location), specialized in typical Brazilian food. Another very famous typical Brazilian food restaurant is Chão Nativo, which has a locations in Setor Oeste and another in Setor Bueno. You have to try the famous Brazilian barbecue. Some famous steakhouses are called Nativas Grill and Favo de Mel.

The public health system in Brazil is universal, known as SUS (Sitema Único de Saúde - Health Unic System). This means that anyone, even migrants, can use it if necessary. However, the purchase of health insurance is mandatory for your period at UFG.

The purchase of health insurance is mandatory for your period at UFG. Therefore, you must know the conditions of your insurance to have access to the private network of doctors and establishments. You can check doctors and hospitals near you through Google/Google Maps and the Regional Medicine Council website: https://www.cremego.org.br/busca-medicos/ or https://www.cremego.org .br/search-por-establishes-de-saude/.

The public health system in Brazil is universal, which means that anyone, even migrants, can use it if necessary. To gain access, all you need is your passport and National Health Card. The issuance of this document is free and can be done online: https://www.gov.br/saude/pt-br/acesso-a -information/actions-and-programs/cns.

How to complete your Registration in the University

Your enrollment at UFG will be done automatically after submitting all your basic documents (passport, visa and health insurance) and arriving in Brazil. We will send you by email about your registration number.
After registration, it is important that your advisor enrolls you in your subjects/classes, so that your registration/enrollment is ACTIVE and you have full access to UFG's features.

LOGIN TO THE UFG SYSTEM (SIGAA):
Once your registration is ACTIVE, you can create your "LOGIN ÚNICO" and access all UFG systems and functionalities. With your Login Único you can enter the Sistem for Students called SIGAA. This sistem is very important to consulte your registration number, the classes you are enrolled in, your grades etc. With your Registration Number you will have access to the University Cafeteria. UFG WI-FI (eduroam):

Residency Permit

For stays longer than 90 days, you must obtain a residency permit, even if your is valid for a longer term.

To obtain the residency permit, follow the steps below:

The “Ocupação Principal" (Main Occupation) field must be filled in with “930 - ESTUDANTE" (STUDENT);
The “Filiação" (Affiliation) fields refer to the names of your mother and father;

The first and second screen must have all mandatory fields filled in. The third screen must have your home address in Brazil and UFG's.

In the “Endereço Comercial / Instituição de Ensino" (Business Address / Educational Institution) field, enter the following information:

The payment amount is R$204.77 and can be paid at any bank, online or in person. Remember to keep the payment document and proof of payment.
Send the following documents to the International Relations Secretariat via email mobilidade.sri@ufg.br:

Document for payment;

After completing these steps, the International Relations Secretariat will forward your documentation to the Federal Police and will send you an email with the next steps.

Learn how to get your CPF Number!

The Document for Identification in Brazil is called CPF, wich is stand for Cadastro de Pessoa Física, and is composed of 11 numbers. The CPF is a fiscal document in Brazil and is widely used as a form of identification, for opening a bank account and receiving funds in general. The process to obtain it is simple and free:

Fill out the form available at: https://servicos.receita.fazenda.gov.br/Servicos/CPF/cpfEstrangeiro/Fcpf.asp.
Remember to disable your pop-up blocker so you can submit the form.
Send the following documents to cpf.residente.exterior@rfb.gov.br:
Form from the previous point completed and signed;
Identification document (preferably passport);
Birth or marriage certificate;
Selfie with your ID close to your face.

After completing these steps, you will receive your CPF number via email within a few days.

UFG has three Cafeterias (commonly called by the students as RU, as the acronyms of the name in Portuguese: Restaurante Universitário). Wich one is located in one of the three UFG Campi.

In the Goiânia Campi (Samambaia and Colemar Natal e Silva), the price of the meal for undergratuated students is R$4,00 (four Reais) and for graduated students and the community (not affiliated with UFG) is R$16,80 (sixteen Reais e eighty Centavos). The meal is commonly composed of rice, beans, one type of protein that varies everyday (also there's an option of protein for vegetarian and vegan people), salad, a fruit and juice. This kind of meal is served for lunch and diner.

Breakfast is served each morning and commonly consist of fruit, bread and an accompaniment for the bread (like butter, jelly or ham). For drinking, there is coffe, tea and milk (with the vegan option of milk as well). The cost of breakfast is R$2,50 (two Reais and fitfy Centavos) for undergraduated students and R$7,66 (seven Reais and sixty six Centavos) for posgraduate and the general public.
